Vol. 6 / December 2011

Happy December! It's hard to believe we have already come to the end of another year, and are starting to think about next year.

This month, I decided to give you a present – a month off from an article written by me! This year I have written quite a few articles addressing change, and I recently came across an article from McKinsey which discusses the best place to start your change initiative in an organization. In addition to beginning change in the correct place and with the correct people, the article underscores a couple of important points:

  • Culture strongly dictates how easily change is made in an organization – new roles and responsibilities must be supported with changes in accountability, and staff must feel they are empowered to make decisions or otherwise act in accordance with the new process.
  • New skills may be required to support changes in roles and responsibilities, and these skills must be mastered before any change will be effective.

It takes more than a new process chart and a decision to change to make a successful transition. I hope these additional insights will help you evaluate your current change initiatives, and contribute to making them even more successful.

I wish you and your family a joyous holiday season!

Until next year,
