Vol. 6 / October 2011

Did you miss me last month? I don't know about you, but this year has been full of change for me. Somehow, all the change caught up with me last month, and I poorly executed my newsletter preparation process. Sorry I missed you!

Speaking of poorly executed business processes... I was speaking with a prospective client recently about a project in which they want to adopt industry "best practices". (If you missed my article about best practices, check it out here). While this may be a worthy goal, it does make me stop and wonder how they know they need to adopt "best practices" in the first place. What is it that finally catches our attention and causes us to dig under the covers and see what's really going on?

This month I share some symptoms of ineffective business processes. Should you find any of these occurring in your organization, it might be time for a closer look. Do any of these sound familiar? I'd love to hear about other symptoms which have caught your attention.

Until next month,

Identifying Process Improvement Opportunities (or Symptoms of a Poorly Executed Process)
All companies have existing business processes – whether documented or not – which have likely evolved over time. As organizations grow and change, processes are modified to meet changes in regulation, competition, technology or business sophistication. There comes a time, however, when a business process has outlived its usefulness in its current incarnation. While there are any number of methodologies which can be used to improve and streamline business processes. The real question is how do you know when a process is ripe for evaluation for improvement?
