Vol. 6 / July 2011

There was some interesting feedback last month regarding my article on the “Five Steps to Better Process Improvement”. One reader in the healthcare industry pointed out how his organization is actively looking for ways to improve processes; however, most efforts are still focused on cost-cutting. At this point, not only in the economic recovery cycle, but also for competitive reasons, our organizations must look past cost cutting and start getting really innovative in the way we “do“ business.

One means of accelerating organizational improvement has been through the adoption of best practices. While there are advantages to adopting a “tried and true” process, there are considerations and impacts which should be evaluated before a general adoption of any best practice.

This month, I share my thought about the adoption of best practices, and how to ensure success should you opt to pursue that route. I hope you find these thoughts useful - I’d like to hear about your experiences in adopting best practices.

Until next month,

Are Best Practices Really Best?
For the past decade or so, there has been an increasing level of focus on adopting “best practices” to improve operations. Many organizations hire consulting firms to seek out the best practice for performing any number of business processes, hoping to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of specific functional areas. Especially during times of focus on product quality and during economic downturns, there is increased interest in adopting best practices to solve challenges. But, are best practices really best for all organizations? Is it really possible to implement a “best practice” defined somewhere else, and realize comparable results?                                                                                                                                                                        View article
